Just like you, I have a story that centers around my complete denial about my weight and elevated blood pressure…
This was about 19 years ago, and I remember that day like it was yesterday. I walked to my car in total disbelief and was scared because I really did not know what to do next. On top of that, I was in complete denial about losing weight.
It was an eye-opener to learn how nutrient poor and sodium/salt rich I was eating – mind you I was not cooking with salt or shaking salt on my food (I grew up with a mother that had high blood pressure).
On my own, I made changes to my eating habits. My blood pressure improved to some degree, but still had periods where it was elevated, and no weight loss occurred.
The Trigger that Lead me to Finally Seek Help
I visited a dialysis center, and this was the trigger that led me to say, ‘enough is enough’. Dialysis being in my future terrified me and I finally accepted my own failed attempts at losing weight on my own.
Finally, I reached out to a Registered Dietitian for help. Over the course of three months, I lost the 20 pounds.
My Set Back
After all the changes, I was still diagnosed with Essential Hypertension – meaning no known cause. It came down to genetics for me.
I was mad, angry, disappointed and felt defeated. Finally, the Lord said to me if I didn’t make those changes to my eating habits, had I not lost the weight, I would have more health problems than just my blood pressure.
I was heading down a slippery slope of health problems and did not know it. I truly believe the denial, challenges, and changes were God’s way of showing me a different direction for my life. At that moment I stopped looking at my diagnosis as a set back!
My Come Back
All of this led me to go back to school to get properly trained to help others not feel afraid to eat certain foods or follow misguided information to lose weight quickly or to get control of a health condition.
One mission I have is to prevent people from unknowingly putting their own life at risk for other problems because the focus is solely on weight or the specific health scare rather than the total body.
